Nigerian Universities Expand Presence in Global Rankings

Nigeria’s higher education sector recorded a notable milestone in 2026 as 24 universities secured positions in the global rankings released by Times Higher Education (THE). This marks a steady improvement in international visibility, signaling progress in research productivity and institutional development.
Leading the national table are University of Ibadan and University of Lagos, both placed within the 801–1000 global band, maintaining their status as Nigeria’s top-performing institutions. Their rankings reflect relatively stronger performance in citation impact, research output, and academic reputation compared to peers.
Other institutions, including Bayero University Kano, Covenant University, and Landmark University, were ranked within the 1001–1200 band, demonstrating growing competitiveness among both public and private universities.
Despite this progress, the majority of Nigerian universities remain within broader ranking bands (1200+), reflecting persistent challenges such as limited funding, infrastructure deficits, and brain drain. Education analysts emphasize that sustained investment, policy reforms, and international collaboration are essential for improving future performance.
